Speaker Series – Seized Land: A Community Uprooted and Reborn

September 25 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Free

How the Navy Acquired the Land to Build the Dahlgren Base

There’s a lot more than science and technology to the story of the Navy’s creation of the Dahlgren base over a century ago. It’s also the tale of the farmers, the fishermen and the communities that were impacted by the Navy’s acquisition of the land. Join Claudette Jordon and Tom Gouldthorpe, as they discuss the impact on their families in the early 1900s, when the base was created, and again in the 1940s, when the base was expanded. Farms were sold; a community was literally uprooted. It’s a story of disruption and of opportunity.

One-hour forum preceded by 4:30 p.m. reception. Free and open to the public. Program begins at 5 pm. Cost is free but donations are accepted. For more info, call the Museum at 540-663-3680.
